Abstract

This study determined the effectiveness of a developed workbook in Mathematics I on the academic performance of first year high school students at Calapi National School, Calapi, Motiong, Samar. The study utilized the experimental method of research using the pre-test and post-test results with the control group and experimental group. The pre-test results of the experimental group and the control group had an average of 14.75 and 14.50 respectively. The computed t for the pre-test result of the experimental groups was 0.208. This led to the acceptance of the hypothesis that there is no significant difference between the pre-test results of the experimental and control groups.  The control group had an average pre-test mean score of 14.50. The post-test mean score was 21.05 giving a difference of 6.55. The computed t value was 13.56 which turned out greater than the tabular t value. Therefore, the hypothesis of no significant difference between the pre-test and post-test mean scores of the control group was rejected. The experimental group and the control group have the same entry behaviour on the basis their age, sex, and average grades in Mathematics I profile, as well as, on the basis of comparison of the result of the pre-test mean scores. This implies that the experiment is free from bias in terms of the results arrived at. The teachers should use workbooks in teaching Mathematics so as to make the lessons not boring because of method of variation.
